Flash memory is non-volatile

 

Consider the flash transistor as an N-P-N “sandwich” with two gates on top. One is a control gate (yellow) and one is a floating gate (orange). The gates are separated by oxide layers (blue) through which current can’t normally pass. When the xstr is off, a binary Zero is stored.
